![]() Jackson, NH 03846
We'll admit it: Jackson has a certain mystique. It first drew artists back in the mid-1800s; they were followed by visitors who admired the scenic beauty portrayed on canvas and wanted to enjoy it themselves. Originally farms opened their doors to these guests, but soon some of the finest grand hotels in the White Mountains were built, including Wentworth Hall (now The Wentworth) and Eagle Mountain House. With the advent of the famous shovel handle lift at Black Mountain, Jackson became a mecca for skiers as well.
The town is small in population, although it's similar in size to other area towns (66.8 square miles as opposed to 74.8 square miles for Bartlett and 69.7 square miles for Conway). Development has been limited since much of the town is White Mountain National Forest and because the town's zoning laws limit commercial development and require a minimum of two acres for house lots. Population 709 Schools Jackson Grammar School in the center of town goes through 6th grade; children then go to Bartlett for grades 7 and 8, and then onto Kennett High School in Conway. Government The town offices are on Route 16A in the white building to the right of the fire station. Recreation When it comes to recreation, Jackson has it all: 2 golf courses (the 18-hole Wentworth Golf Course and 9-hole Eagle Mountain House course), 2 alpine ski areas (Black Mountain and Wildcat), the world renowned Jackson XC ski network (with 150km of cross-country ski trails), miles of hiking trails and plenty of fishing (try the Ellis River—the pond in the village park is for children only). |
